Statement from President Clifford Montiero, NAACP-Providence on the Passing of Sen. Kennedy
In Memoriam: NAACP-Providence Mourns Loss of Civil Rights Champion Senator Ted Kennedy
The NAACP-Providence is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy, the well-regarded Democrat from Massachusetts. A dedicated public servant, Ted Kennedy was a champion of civil rights and so much more.
"We lost a great friend and champion to honorable causes in Ted Kennedy -- a defender of women, children and all those who are discriminated against and underserved in this country," said NAACP-Providence President Clifford Montiero. "Ted Kennedy is remembered fondly for the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the 1965 Voting Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act. He was a great leader in the fight for health care reform and my regret is that he will not see the passage of this legislation, which he has fought so long for. Kennedy leveled the playing field for so many, especially the underdog. Kennedy will be an extremely hard act to follow.
Senator Kennedy was always a true friend to the people of Rhode Island, and I will miss this great man and honorable public servant. My thoughts and prayers, and those of all the members of the NAACP-Providence, are with Congressman Patrick Kennedy today, and the entire Kennedy family."
