Dear Members and Friends,
On Tuesday, November 7, I am asking you to go to the polls to Value Your Vote and Vote Your Value. There are three important questions on the ballot all NAACP-Providence branch members and friends need to be aware of and support.
Question 1-Casino in West Warwick (VOTE YES) NAACP-Providence branch supports ballot question #1. This would amend the Constitution to allow the Narragansett Indian tribe to operate a casino in the Town of West Warwick. NAACP-Providence branch supports the sovereign nation of the Narragansett Indians to have the most significant economic opportunity in its history. The casino in West Warwick would create thousands of jobs that would impact not only the minority community, but the economic growth of the entire state.
Question 2-Restoration of voting rights to convicted felons (VOTE YES) NAACP-Providence branch supports ballot question #2. This would amend the Constitution so felons who have served their time in jail would be allowed to vote again. Considering how the felony disenfranchisement law has impacted people of color in our state, it is important the right to vote become an important part of their rehabilitation process to become productive, law-abiding citizens.
Question 9-Affordable Housing Bonds (VOTE YES) NAACP Providence branch supports ballot question #9. This would authorize the State of Rhode Island to create a $50 million bond to build affordable housing. It is important that affordable housing be available to every class of Rhode Islanders: impoverished people, low-income renters, young families, senior citizens, etc.
The NAACP-Providence branch wants to make sure its members and friends are well-informed about those issues most critical to the organization. We ask that you vote YES on Questions (1, 2, 9). We also ask our members and friends to use their knowledge of the candidates running for office who share the goals and concerns of the NAACP. Being knowledgeable about the issues and candidates who support our goal to achieve equality and justice for all African Americans and other minorities empowers us not only as individuals but as an organization.
This Tuesday, November 7, Value Your Vote and Vote Your Value and bring 5 of your friends. Thank you.
Yours in Freedom,
Clifford R. Montiero, President
