PRESS RELEASE: NAACP-PROVIDENCE BRANCH PAYS TRIBUTE TO JACKIE ROBINSON BY HONORING MINORITY STUDENT ATHLETES
In honor of the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball, the NAACP-Providence Branch chose two minority public high school senior athletes who exemplify Jackie Robinsons perseverance, courage, and integrity in sports, academics, and community service. The two award winners were announced at the Saturday, 8:00 am, April 28th, breakfast which was held at the Riviera Inn in East Providence, RI. Top awards went to Carlene Fonseca, from Central Falls High School, and Winston Smith from Hope Leadership Academy in Providence. The students were awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship to be used at the college/university they have been accepted to. The two main speakers at the Jackie Robinson Remembered Breakfast were Dr. Wayne Montague, from Hope Leadership Academy in Providence and Tom Garrick, URI Womens Basketball Head Coach.
The nominees and winners were also honored by the Pawtucket Red Sox Baseball Team. At the Saturday, April 28th, Paw Sox vs. Buffalo Bison game, the minority student athletes participated in a pre-game Jackie Robinson 60th anniversary ceremony at 12:30 pm at the Paw Sox Stadium in Pawtucket, RI.
